My name is Kyle Yorgason, and I’ve known Andrew and Becky Black for more than 20 years. We first met at the beginning of podiatry school in Des Moines, IA. For the next few years, Brandon Bishop, Andrew and I formed a study group that became much more. We challenged each other in our learning, rallied together during struggles and became near pros at foosball and ping-pong. Our wives became fast friends and our children learned to crawl, walk and talk together. We shared barbecues, births and biochemistry lectures.
We were family.
Then we each moved to start residencies in three different states. Later, we each began new lives practicing what we had been taught.
Most friendships fade, and rarely do we get chances to reform old relationships. But some friendships, some friends, resist the erosion of time and distance.
When I was low, and needed a lift, Andrew went to bat for me. And my life currently is what it is, in large part because he reached out and told me about a job. Maybe the fact that we shared a real struggle in school contributes to our brotherhood. But more likely, Andrew was just a good friend. He saw that I had a need, and he helped me out when I needed it the most.
Now Andrew’s family has a need.
Having been the recipient of two kidney transplants from his siblings, Andrew lived on borrowed time. And boy did he live! He loved fishing, skiing and all things outdoors. He was a true connoisseur of music. He loved to tell stories and was everyone’s friend. But most of all, I saw Andrew live according to his principles and faith in God.
Andrew passed away earlier this week, suddenly and unexpectedly from a brain bleed. He leaves behind a beautiful family: Becky and four children. But even through the tragedy of his passing, he continues to bless others through the miracle of organ donation.
If you would like to help support Becky and her young family in their future and current needs, please consider this gofundme.
