This past Saturday, while Cary and I were at a work conference in DC, Cary got a call from her dogsitter saying her dog Gertie had attacked and bitten Bentley. Cary drove immediately to the ER (VRA in Gaithersburg) to meet them and Bentley had a horrible laceration to his back/side. Cary stayed at the ER from 7pm to 7am while he underwent surgery to clean the wounds and stitch him up. The vet then sent him home with her, but later in the day he looked really bad so Cary rushed him back to another ER, CARE Vet in Frederick. Turns out, he had major complications from surgery- extremely low blood pressure and glucose levels. Seeing Bentley in this condition terrified Cary but the amazing vets gave him sugar and meds right away and he perked up but he needed to be hospitalized and monitored for several more days. He was admitted for the second time on Sunday.

This week was torture for Cary but she was able to visit Bentley 3 times a day and he would sleep on her for the entire visit. The vet staff all loved Bentley (of course) and nicknamed him Piglet. They got his blood pressure back up and his glucose levels at a normal level. He had many rounds in a Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber to help his wounds heal.

On Thursday, Cary was able to bring Bentley home! He has to go back for frequent check-ups starting Monday so they can assess his wounds- they said it’s likely he will need another surgery for wound debridement. We’re really hoping that isn’t the case and he can heal on his own.

He is on broad spectrum antibiotics but they’re waiting on the results of a culture to make sure he’s on the best antibiotics. He’s eating well for Cary and is enjoying being back at home!

This has been a very costly few days- Cary spent a total of $11,240. With Monday’s visit, she’ll likely be spending more. The total will depend on what B needs done. He will get another round in the Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber, which is $247 per session.
