On July 16th, 2022, Luka A. Seymour entered the world and was surrounded by love. During the short hospital stay, Luka’s eating, cries, and alertness slowed. The Seymours voiced concern but were reassured it was typical newborn sleepiness and discharged 24hrs after birth.
Once home, Luka’s responsiveness stopped. The Seymours hadn’t seen Luka open his eyes, heard him cry or wake for feedings. His pediatrician, without concern, asked the Seymours to return the next day for routine screenings.
During Luka’s next appointment, his pediatrician became alarmed and instructed them to head straight to the emergency room. The Seymours stated, “It was a horror scene from Grey’s Anatomy. We sat stunned while nurses and doctors poked, prodded and tested our unresponsive baby. Life since then has not been the same.”
Luka has now been diagnosed with Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE). It is believed at some point in late pregnancy or delivery brain damage was caused by a lack of blood flow and oxygen. Seymour shared, “Luka has severe brain trauma and irreversible damage in 4 areas. The prognosis from the doctors is very grim. We don’t know his future.”
HIE is ranked within 3 levels: mild, moderate and severe. Luka is said to be severe. His family explained, “If he survives, the odds of severe disabilities affect 75% or more infants and range from cerebral palsy, never being able to walk, talk, eat, speak, and possibly not ever being able to breathe on his own.”
Please help us in our efforts to support the Seymours and baby Luka. Currently, Luka is in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and on a ventilator. There is a long road ahead for this wonderful family, but with your help we can make a difference.
“While his future is very uncertain, we will not lose hope. Our strong boy has fought hard, and we will continue to fight alongside him for as long as need be.” – The Seymours
