My name is Paola, and I am creating this page on behalf of the best thing in my life, my 4.5-year-old dachshund, Atlas.
For the past few months, Atlas has been battling severe Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). This painful spinal condition has progressed to the point where Atlas has lost the ability to walk and do his necessities on his own. My heart breaks when I think that the dog who once chased squirrels and bounded through Central Park and the city now needs constant, intensive care.
We have explored every non-surgical option available to us as recommended by various veterinarians who all thought Atlas wouldn’t be able to gain the ability to walk with surgery—which we were also willing to do if necessary. After every visit, finally through a specialist, we all committed to a rigorous treatment plan that has included:
- Multiple veterinarian consultations and emergency visits.
- Laser Therapy treatments to reduce inflammation and pain.
- Intensive Physical Therapy sessions at home and at the clinic.
- Medication management for pain and recovery, including steroids.
While these treatments have helped manage his pain and have helped gain some of his sensitivity back, the costs have become overwhelming. We have exhausted our personal savings in this fight to get Atlas back on his feet.
Caring for a dog with severe mobility issues requires specialized equipment and ongoing therapy. As it can be imagined, meeting these costs alone has become impossible. Therefore, we’ve decided to create this page.
The funds raised will go directly to Atlas's ongoing care, including:
- Mobility Equipment: Although Atlas has a wheelchair, we are in desperate need of a carrier to bring him to his vet appointments.
- Continuing Therapy: Weekly physical therapy and hydrotherapy sessions to build muscle strength and coordination at home and at the clinic. Atlas has spent over 17 days doing on-site therapy to regain weight and muscle strength. At home, we’ve adapted a space where Atlas can receive physical therapy and where we can store special exercise equipment.
- Home Care Supplies: High-quality supportive bedding, wee-wee pads, cleaning supplies, lotion, medication, and supplies to maintain his quality of life and prevent secondary infections.
- Future Consultations: Necessary follow-up appointments.
Atlas is family. He is a fighter with a wonderful, spirited personality, and he deserves every chance to live a comfortable and happy life.
