My name is Angie, and I work in the medical field. On April 25th, I suffered a back injury while helping a patient at work. Initially, I did not realize the severity of my injury. Three days later, I ended up in the hospital and was misdiagnosed with a muscle strain. I returned home and was unable to get out of bed for two days as I lay in excruciating pain. On the 30th, I was transferred by EMS to the hospital and had to undergo spinal fusion surgery (Facetectomy and Posterolateral Arthrodesis) on May 2nd. My hospital stay was 10 days, and I was given a note signed by the surgeon stating I was not able to return to work for at least 6 to 8 weeks.
When I applied for FMLA, I was denied due to not having worked for my company for a full year. Shortly after I arrived home, I received a letter in the mail from my employer stating I would be terminated from my position on May 27th if I was unable to return to work.
With the new outcome of losing my job and medical benefits, I now face a multitude of financial burdens. Between medical bills, future doctor appointments, physical therapy, medications, and ongoing living expenses, I face uncertainty as a single parent of not knowing how I am going to take care of my children.
For someone who has been in the medical field for over 15 years and who has taken care of countless wonderful strangers, I am asking strangers to take care of me through this recovery process. Thank you for your consideration.
