Andy Mower's Healing and Strength while battling NMOSD
Donation protected
As many of you know, my dear in-laws have been going through some very challenging times. On September 30th 2024 my father-in-law Andy Mower woke up as usual, he walked downstairs, did few exercises, tried to turn on the TV with a remote but his hand could not grab the remote. That was the moment he knew, something is seriously wrong. By the time the Ambulance workers evaluated dad, he was having really difficult time walking. At Wynn hospital the doctor did an MRI which showed no significant abnormality. The Lumbar Puncture showed that inflammation markers were high. Based on the symptoms present the doctor said it was a very aggressive case of Guillain-Barre. In the ER and in the ICU dad kept having pain in his neck and left shoulder. Another MRI was done which showed Longitudinal Extensive Transverse Myelitis (severe swelling of the spinal cord). After reviewing the MRI dad was diagnosed with NMOSD, a very rare autoimmune disease. Dad was taken care of by some wonderful doctors and nurses in the ER and the ICU. He received 5 IVIG treatments (from my research cost of one IVIG treatment is approximately $9,720). He also received 5 high doses of steroids ($850). Unfortunately there was not a whole lot of progress with mobility for dad with these treatments. The physicians recommended Plasmapheresis. This treatment is not available at Wynn hospital, they transferred dad (by ambulance ride) to NYC, Westchester hospital on October 17. At Westchester hospital dad received 5 Plasmapheresis treatments (cost roughly $10,000 per 1 treatment). On October 31 2024 dad was transferred to Rehab. The staff and dad are working hard to get his strength back. He states that he feels some level of improvement. He has more sensation in his legs and more movement in his arms. Some reflexes came back. However he still is not able to sit up by himself or stand or use his hands. Your prayers are so much appreciated. Due to family business the insurance deductible is very high at $18,000 and the bills are starting to pile up on top of that. If it is on your heart please donate to support my in-laws, Andy and Joan Mower at such a trying time.
