Support Amy Coffey's Journey

Amy Coffey is a wonderful 9-year-old girl who loves sport, her friends and school. Her parents are Liam and Aisling Coffey (Moneygall/Gurtagarry), and she has a big sister Rachel who is 11. Since Amy was born she has been under the excellent care of CHI (previously known as Crumlin) and Portiuncula hospitals and needed surgery shortly after birth.

Amy had been well for many years but unfortunately on her 9th birthday in June 2024 she was admitted to hospital with new symptoms. Amy spent most of her summer holidays that year in and out of hospital, enduring many tests and numerous blood and platelet transfusions.

Unfortunately, in July 2024, Amy was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder which has resulted in bone marrow failure. The HSE are arranging for Amy to undergo treatment in Great North Children's Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Amy will travel there to begin treatment later this month. Amy will undergo chemo before receiving a bone marrow transplant. It is expected that Amy and her parents will spend 6 to 13 weeks in Newcastle for the treatment and recovery period. This means that Amy will be spending another birthday in hospital while she recovers post-transplant.

While the medical treatment is covered by the HSE, the family will incur many other costs including loss of earnings, travel and accommodation costs. Further treatment/care in Ireland will be required but details are not yet fully known.

Amy is a tremendous young girl who has faced these challenges bravely. Her parents, Liam and Aisling, are very thankful for any support that can be given. They will be forever grateful.
