On May 8, 2007, Matt and Diana Kennedy gave birth to twins, Allie and TJ. Allie was born with Myelominegocle, the most severe form of Spina Bifida, which was unbeknownst to her parents prior to birth. This was the beginning of a long and strenuous medical journey that will last a lifetime.
Allie had 18 surgeries in her 17 years of life, literally from head to toe.
On August 13, 2024, Allie had bi-lateral legs, (meaning both legs), and knees reconstruction, a reconstruction and fusion of the ankle along with foot reconstruction. She also had a section of femur removed to even the length of her legs.
At this first weekly visit, the care team noticed Allie developed a pressure sore on her heel, but she had no feeling from her knee down. The following week, she developed another one.
Several weeks into her stay in the hospital, a meeting was called to explain to Allie's parents that insurance does not deem it necessary to keep Allie in the hospital, despite the care team's insistence that Allie should be in the hospital. As a result they were asked to leave the hospital and moved to the Ronald McDonald House as a last resort.
It was definite that mom would need to take a Leave of Absence from work since Allie cannot dress, bathe, complete toilet functions, or any other care for herself since both legs have been rebuilt.
Life has become a real struggle. Meals, gas, car maintenance and medical bills have become increasingly hard to cover, not to mention the emotional stress on Allie's entire family. If you would like to consider donating a small amount to help them through this difficult time, they would be grateful and appreciative.
