If you're receiving this note, you know Alex's story. Many of you have met him and been taken by his kindness, humility, hard work, and unwavering good nature.
Alex has lived with us for 16 months. His goal is to live permanently in the US, but he fully understands that there are no guarantees. In the meantime he takes English classes 4 evenings a week at our community college and works 6 days a week at Chic-fil-A. Despite the lack of down time, he faces each day with determination, fixed on his goal.
The next step in Alex's journey is a big one. The hearing to judge his asylum application is on Thursday, July 24. If he makes it through this first round, he'll be scheduled for a second hearing that will offer a final determination.
We have secured the counsel of an experienced immigration lawyer who thinks that Alex has a particularly good case for asylum. Nothing is guaranteed -- especially in today's environment -- but he believes that Alex's claim/story will be given very serious consideration.
The cost to retain legal counsel is $12,000+. That's a lot of money for a young man who makes $16/hour, but Alex believes in his heart that he can work enough and save enough to make it happen.
Which brings us to the purpose of this note: Would you like to help Alex out? He has no idea that we've created this GoFundMe page -- and certainly isn't expecting anything -- but we've done it so that he'll see that he doesn't have to walk this journey alone.
If you'd like to help, thank you so very much. Any amount will go a long way. Just follow the instructions listed below. If you're not able to help financially, please keep Alex in your prayers as he prepares for this July 24 hearing.
Alex's journey to the US began in the Fall of 2023 when he walked from Merida, Venezuela to Mexico City. The next leg of the journey is entirely different, but just as challenging. Thanks in advance for walking with him.
