21 Homes. 1 A.M. Fire. 45 Lives Uprooted in an Instant.
By Kassandra Taggart, Broker at Real Property Management

In the quiet early morning hours of September 26th, 2025, while most of us were asleep in the safety of our beds, an inferno broke loose at the Ravenwood Condominium Complex.

An Anchorage Police Department (APD) officer, while on patrol, happened to notice a faint trail of smoke. He didn’t wait. He followed his gut, investigated, and immediately called in the fire. Together with another responding officer, they took it upon themselves to start evacuating the building before the flames could claim lives. If those officers had not been there… lives would have been lost. There is no doubt.

By the time the flames were finally subdued, 21 homes were left devastated — more than 5 were completely gone, others soaked, blackened, and ruined by smoke, fire, and water.

There was no time to grab anything. No time to think.

One senior woman didn't grab her teeth, her phone, and was just in her nightgown, clutching nothing but dog.

A young family of four escaped with their children, their toddler sobbing as they have only ashes left and the clothes on their back. Although with nothing, they helped neighbors move what was left out of the units.

In one of the destroyed units, is a board member who lost both of his pets and broke down crying as they can't be replaced, they were his children.

This wasn’t just a fire — this was the erasure of daily life, the kind of trauma that leaves people emotionally and financially shattered.

Imagine losing everything at 1 a.m.

Imagine explaining to your child that their bed, their books, their drawings, and their entire room are gone.

Imagine trying to pay a mortgage on a home that no longer exists — and still being expected to cover association dues.

When I painted the picture of what is to come, grief overwhelmed one owner and she broke down in tears, anger, and fear all at once. I'm so thankful her friends were there to help with the grief.

For the people of Ravenwood Association, this is reality for 45 people - 21 units.

Please consider donating. No amount is too small. Even $20 buys socks and a warm sweatshirt for someone who ran into the street with nothing but pajamas.

WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR:
  • $2,000 for each person to get immediate clothing and essentials for the 45 people impacted.
  • 1 year of HOA dues support to ease their financial burden so they can focus on healing — mentally, emotionally, and financially.
  • Two buy 2 awards to provide to the police officer that acted quickly and to the fire departments that

This is not an abstract tragedy — these are real people, our neighbors, and they need us now more than ever.

We at Real Property Management, in partnership with the Board of Directors of Ravenwood Condominium Association, are working directly with each household. Every dollar will go straight into the hands of those affected — not into overhead, not into administration.

WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW:
  • The entire building has been shut down. It could be a year before anyone is able to return.
  • 5 condos were completely destroyed.
  • The remaining 16 units have such extensive smoke and water damage that only 30% of personal belongings may be salvageable.
  • 45 people — including seniors, children, and hardworking families — are now displaced.
  • Though insurance will cover some temporary housing and belongings, it won't cover the immediate, urgent needs that hit within hours of disaster — clothes, shoes, medications, transportation, and ongoing mortgage and association dues while they live elsewhere.
  • Those that had State Farm - were already given $500 just to get started.

This is where we need your help.

Let’s show them they’re not alone.

Donate now. Share their story. Be the neighbor they need.
