Not many of you know about my mom being in the hospital for the last month. Things happened so fast that only some close family and friends were notified.

She initially went to convenient care because she was having a hard time breathing for over a month. They treated her for allergies with steroids and antibiotics. Her symptoms minimally improved, briefly. She went back a few weeks later and they performed a chest x-ray this time, finding fluid around her heart and enlarged lymph nodes in her chest. They sent her to the ER for further testing, such as a CT scan. The scan showed additional findings of a 12.7cm mediastinal mass (which is a very large mass, about the size of a fist, in the center of her chest, behind her heart, in between her lungs). Biopsies were performed and the mass was confirmed to be small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma.

Some complications happened during the biopsy, along with other concerning matters, that our family decided we needed to transfer her to a different hospital. Since being admitted, she's had a pericardial window placed (which drains the fluid from around the heart), a drain also placed to remove fluid from around the right lung, and a lot of other tests, etc. Due to the size and location of the mass, surgery to remove it is not an option. This type of cancer is very aggressive and tends to spread very quickly. We decided that chemotherapy needed to be started immediately, so she had her first 3 doses of chemo this week, then again in 3 weeks. Going through chemo with the heart and lung drains in place puts her at very high risk for infection.
