Donate to Aid Liz's Emergency Surgery Costs

This is Carlton and Sarah. Our Beagle, Elizabeth (Liz), suddenly became sick on April 17th. It started when Liz became less interested in food and would only drink sips of water.

By Saturday morning, she was still sick, so we took her to a vet hospital immediately. Her test results came back normal, and she received a subcutaneous injection for dehydration.

Liz was recovering, and by Monday, she was eating and drinking. But by Tuesday evening, she wasn’t eating, only drank sips, and was shaking.

We were scheduling her with a regular vet for Friday when, later in the day, we received a text from our roommate. He said Liz started having stools with bright red blood coming out. We immediately left work early and met our roommate at the emergency vet.

The vets ran tests and performed an X-ray on her. The results showed that a foreign object had become stuck in her intestinal region. The vets asked if we were going to proceed with a risky surgery or have her be put down. This is a really hard decision for any owner to make, but ultimately we decided to proceed with surgery. The caveat being that if it was determined her quality of life would be severely impacted, we would let her go in her sleep, peacefully.

During surgery, the vets were surprised to not find any foreign object but that her intestines had folded into themselves, a condition called intussusception. This condition is normally found in puppies of larger breeds. The vets are unsure how it would have developed in a 7-year-old Beagle.

The surgery was risky, and again, we were asked if we wanted to proceed. We did. We love our beautiful baby and would do anything for her as long as she had a good quality of life.

The surgery was a success, and she is now in recovery. As of right now (April 24th), she is starting to eat and drink again. She is not in the clear yet. She may still develop sepsis within the next few days (if it happens, it is usually 4-5 days after surgery). And if she develops that, she will likely not make it.

The cost to save her life was $12,000. We aren’t asking for a full payment. But my partner and I are preschool teachers who do not have that kind of money on hand. Any amount of financial help, whether large or small, would really and truly help us pay the bill.
