On Monday, Kai had routine bloodwork done, and it showed a low hemoglobin and some other “off” labs. We had the hemoglobin rechecked the following day and were told to meet with hematology on Friday. Kai’s appearance changed, and he became lethargic. We then brought him to the children's emergency room to be seen.
Within a few hours, we were admitted for observation. When we were transferred upstairs to the PICU, Kai’s labs had resulted, and things changed very quickly. The room filled with staff, and Kai was sedated and intubated in order to put in a central line through his neck.
Kai was experiencing kidney failure, and his blood pressure was so low they brought a crash cart over, anticipating he would need resuscitation.
There haven’t been many times where we have wondered if he would make it; however, this was one of those times.
The team moved quickly to stabilize him and his pressures to protect his heart, as his potassium levels were critically impacting his heart function.
Kai’s temperature went from 85 degrees to 105 within 4 hours, and he maintained that temperature until yesterday morning when he was placed on a cooling blanket/machine to manually keep him regulated.
Kai was stabilized, and we still are searching for answers.
We know he has a major infection but don’t know where or what caused it. He is now on multiple blood pressure medications as well as a few antibiotics to hopefully kill whatever is growing.
Cardiologists say his heart is in similar condition to before all of this, so they are not concerned with that at this time.
Our little fighter will remain intubated in the ICU until we have more answers or until his body can manage his blood pressure without as much medication.
