During Hurricane Debbie's visit to Raleigh last month, Jim witnessed a devastating accident. With blinding rain, a car hydroplaned clear across the highway and smashed into a tree at high speed from the slick rain, directly in front of him. He called 911, but they did not respond due to high call volumes from the storm. He went to check on the driver and found a very serious situation. The driver was injured but able to speak and tell Jim that there were 2 babies in the back seat. The back of the car was completely crushed in. There was a lot of blood coming from them, and neither were responsive. With 911 still not answering, he started loading this family into his truck knowing that there was no time to wait. Thankfully, a nurse practitioner saw him carrying a baby from the wreck and stopped. He climbed in the truck with them and began CPR. He was able to get him breathing during the car ride to the hospital, and the other baby also regained consciousness. They arrived at Wake Med as fast as possible and promptly got the care they needed. The injuries were serious: bruised organs, broken bones, torn ligaments, lung injuries, skull fractures, brain swelling, and bleeding, to name a few. Things were very critical for many long days. Step by step, healing began with good news of brain activity, moving body parts, breathing on their own again, and so on. Dad has recovered from his injuries but has not left those babies' side yet. The little ones have a long road ahead yet, but they are making big strides. We were able to spend time getting to know their families, and they are amazing. Anton and Shakeerah have a lot of loving support from their immediate and extended families, and they will for sure need that on this journey to recovery. The condition that Jim found them in was horrific, and it is an absolute miracle that they are alive. The last thing that parents are thinking about in a time of crisis is the cost and financial toll it can take—from time away from work, care of other children, and the million costs associated with a terrible life-altering ordeal like this. They have not wanted to ask anyone for help, but I know the weight of this is heavy, so I am asking. Please consider donating to this sweet and amazing family (part of our family now❤️) so that their focus can be solely on helping Honor and Anoir go back to being healthy and active 2 and 3-year-old toddlers as soon as humanly possible. If you are someone that often gives holiday help to a family—please consider it be to the Queen family.
