On June 4th, my spunky, kind-hearted nephew, Elliot, went in for a routine adenoidectomy. The surgery went well, and they were sent home. One week after his surgery, he hadn't been recovering like one would hope and started to go downhill. On June 10th, Maya noticed that he was having trouble raising his head, and by the morning of the 11th, he couldn't lift it at all. This began their multiple trips to the emergency room. There is a very rare complication that affects the area where the head connects to the neck. They placed him in a C-collar and consulted a neurosurgeon. They decided to give him steroids and sent him home. The following day, they returned to the ER at the request of the ER physician and ENT. They did more imaging to get to the bottom of it. Today, Elliot is feeling better, and even though they still haven't quite figured it out, it has put Maya and Gabe in a tight spot. Even though they have insurance, it won't cover the medical cost until they hit their deductible.
