In 2023, my husband and I experienced a nightmarish situation. With no notice, we were forced out of our home and told it was condemned. We had only our prescription medications and the clothes on our backs. We had nowhere else to go.
We are both middle-aged and disabled. I'm a cancer survivor whose hips were destroyed by the radiation therapy I received. I’ve endured six hip surgeries and continue to live with a chronic hip infection. My husband is partially blind and has severe back issues. We had no family or friends to help us. We had to stay in a hotel for four months at our own expense while we searched for new housing. We still had to pay the mortgage on our house that we weren’t allowed to live in. We also had to pay legal fees and a lawyer, as our suburb took legal action against us.
We finally found a used mobile home that we could afford. We had to pay the down payment and setup, as well as building a ramp, as I am a wheelchair user. We were not allowed to take our own property out of our old house, so we had to furnish our new home from scratch. We spent thousands of dollars on repairs for the old house until we realized we didn’t have enough money. It took 18 months to sell the house at a loss.
Four months in a hotel, two mortgages, legal fees, surprise car repairs, and replacing the necessities of a home not only depleted our savings, but have left us deeply in debt. We can no longer pay our bills. We would appreciate any help getting above water again. Thank you.
