A Personal Request for Support During My Cancer Surgery Recovery

Dear Friends, Family, and Community,

As many of you know, I’ve spent more than 30 years caring for patients, friends, and loved ones—even when my own health wasn’t at its best. Over the years, I’ve had my share of injuries and surgeries, but it’s been a good decade since my last one. Unfortunately, that streak has ended.

I’ve recently been diagnosed with cancer and will need surgery to remove it. The recovery period is expected to take 4–8 weeks, during which I won’t be able to work. As a self-employed healthcare provider, this means no income while I heal—a reality that brings enormous financial stress on top of the health challenges.

Between the pandemic, financial setbacks, and continuing to support my 84-year-old mother and my daughter as she finishes graduate school, this surgery comes at a time when resources are already stretched thin.

Those who know me understand how hard it is for me to ask for help. I’ve always been the caregiver, not the care-receiver. But life reminds us that care is a two-way street. Today, I need to lean on my community—on the loving and caring people around me, who I appreciate more than words could ever say.

In my own self-deprecating way, I’ll just say it:

Sh#t happens, and this time, it landed squarely on me—LOL.

That said, I’m determined to overcome this hurdle, heal, and return to caring for others, just as I’ve always done.
