On January 26th, 2021, after several weeks of hospitalization, Tany Chen Cao passed away due to complications of COVID-19. Tany passed away at the age of 65 and is survived by her husband, Naikang Cao, and her daughter, Kacey Cao.
As some of you may know, Tany was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer over 10 years ago. She has always been a very strong-willed individual and made a full recovery, despite the 2% survival rate of her cancer.
Soon after, her cancer metastasized to her brain and she went through the battle of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery for a second time. Despite this obstacle, she continued to survive and was in full remission for many years.
Unfortunately, with her already weakened lungs from her previous lobectomy, she was not able to survive the damage COVID-19 did to her lungs. Tany was able to pass away peacefully with family by her side.
Tany was a very creative person who loved to make things with her hands. Many people around her received her beautiful handmade jewelry, which she thoughtfully crafted depending on the healing properties of the gemstone.
Tany was also a devout Buddhist who felt very passionately about her beliefs. While we must mourn her loss, we must also remember that this is not the end for her. We must also celebrate her next journey in life.
If you are interested in helping us honor Tany, please consider donating in her memory. Donations will be sent to Fo Guan Shan Hsi Lai Temple, a place where Tany felt most at peace.
Her family will make sure the donations will be used for prayers and offerings in Tany's memory.
We understand everyone may not have the means to donate monetarily so we also ask those interested in honoring Tany to please say this prayer for her:
"The Buddha said,
Life is a journey.
Death is a return to earth.
The universe is like an inn.
The passing years are like dust.
Regard this phantom world
As a star at dawn, a bubble in a stream,
A flash of lightning in a summer cloud,
A flickering lamp – a phantom – and a dream."
Tany's mom gave her daughter, Kacey a small book of Buddhist idioms and she would like to share her favorite one with you at this time:
"Life is impermanent,
Wisdom is eternal;
The love in our heart is boundless,
and our spirit will always remain."
This quote is able to provide peace for Kacey at her most difficult times.
Kacey and her family are so appreciative of the outpour of love and support from their friends and family. May we all find the strength to get through this together.
