Cecilia Peace Nevill — Mum, Nanny, Sister and Friend, born on 14 September 1936 in Worawora, Ghana, the 10th child of Francis Otuo and Florence Ampeah. From her earliest years she showed the grit and sparkle that would define her whole life. She studied hard, went through boarding school with her sister Matilda, and trained as a teacher — soon earning the name Teacher Obba (“female teacher”).
Never one to sit still, she raised rabbits and chickens as a hobby, then turned it into a business, using her profits to add two rooms to her father’s home. That was Mum in a nutshell: clever, resourceful, always building — homes, families, futures.
But her story didn’t stop there. In the UK, she became the bedrock of her family. As a mother, she was steady and selfless. As a grandmother, she was pure magic. She turned counting Quality Street sweets into maths lessons and ordinary food into heritage.
Mum, Nanny, Teacher Obba — she wore many titles, but to all of us she was the same: protector, teacher, and inspiration.
Now, we want to give her the farewell she deserves: one filled with dignity, gratitude, and love. Any contribution will help us honour her memory and celebrate the extraordinary life she built, one brick, one lesson, and one laugh at a time.
