On October 18, 2005 I became a T6/T7 paraplegic from a small lesion on my spinal cord, the whole process took 40 minutes. Over the years there have been many ups and downs, many adjustments to life and attitude. The grace of God, the support of my children, and a few select friends has been crucial to my survival as a functioning person.
Imagine accomplishing everyday tasks - cooking dinner, grocery shopping, reaching that item in the back of your freezer - from the comfort of your dining room or office chair. I can't tell you how many times I have been assaulted by frozen food! Now imaging you are a mere 12 inches taller. Seems small but is can be life changing.
On my current wheelchair I have a seat elevation system which raises me that much needed 12 inches. However, my chair is over 5 1/2 years old and many parts are no longer available. I have begun the 45-90 day process for a new chair. Unfortunately, insurance does not cover the seat elevation system. Five years ago the cost was $900, now the cost is between $1500 and $1800 and must be paid in advance before I can complete the process for the new chair. I am working with NuMotion a mobility company out of Orlando who have been amazing through this process.
