I want to get my husband of 52 yrs help. Scott was in the hosital 2 1/2 months...nursing home 2wks FOR REHAB but the manager stopped it before it started. He put Scott inisolation even though he wasnt contagious, back in hospital 4 days, back to nursing home 3 days and sent home. He was supposed to have rehab, NO ONE CAME. back in the hospital again for a week , came home 2 wks ago with rehabilitation ordered and set up again. NO ONE HAS COME TO THE HOUSE OR CALLED.. Scott needs physical and pulmonary rehabilitation. He is very limited in what he can do. a mobility scooter and an Inogen oxygen machine would be a great help.

. My husband , Scott got pneumonia in late April this year. The Dr put him on medicine for a week. It didn't help. I took him to the hospital May 4th, they admitted him with pneumonia. Scott was in the hospital 4 days at Bremen, IN. there they gave him IV treatment for pneumonia, three sets of IV medicines a day. May 7th 5pm, The Dr there thought he was ready to go home and recover. We went home, 8 hrs later his oxygen was only in the 70's , 72 to be exact. it should be in the 90's. 2 am. on back at Bremen they took an x ray and said that he was worse than when he came in, four days before. The treatment didn't work he still had pneumonia . The Dr ordered alot of blood tests and 4 blood cultures. The decision was made to transfer him to South Bend ,Beacon Memorial .

At Memorial Scott was admitted

with pnuemonia. May 8th The 1st day there, they put him on oxygen & did more blood work and more blood cultures that morning. May 9th, 2nd day at Memorial, he started having more trouble breathing, , oxygen was increased. The Dr ordered a Bipap machine . They put him on the bi pap machine . After a very scary short time, it got so bad that he could not get his breath at all. The bi pap machine was actually forcing oxygen into his body, but he could not breathe in. I yelled for the nurse. The nurse got the respiratory tech in the room right away. He put the bi pap machine up to a 100%. It wasn't helping Scott couldn't get the oxygen. The tech told me that there was nothing else he could do unless Scott would go on a ventilator. The other option was to just make him comfortable. Scott never wanted to be on a ventilator, but I begged him to please go on it for a short time. I promised him Iwould not ask him to stay on it if there was no hope of getting off of it. He agreed to the vent and with in minutes he was rushed away to intensive care. 2 nurses came for my son and I to escort us to intensive care. He had days of blood work, sometimes every couple of hours, blood cultures taken daily, dialysis was started with a needle in his neck, a central line from his neck with 4 IV lines , Oxygen, nutrition tube in nose, 8 machines hanging up feeding him medicine around the clock. Several Dr's were taking care of him. It was hell on earth. Finally he started breathing on his own! After 7 days on a ventilator May 17th, he was weaned off and moved to critical care.

3 days later Dr's are talking about discharging him the next day .

Overnight he got much worse. Everything started going wrong. More blood work , more blood cultures, sputum, urine, anytests they can do. mri, CT scans, checking brain, lungs, heart. Nothing was showing up in the tests. More and more drugs, IVs etc still none of the tests found a reason he was getting worse fast! His kidneys weren't working right. His bowels stopped working.

After 4 more days of tests , a lot of pain and anxiety and fear of the unknown . One of the doctors walked in and said, we found out what's going on. He said, you gotten a bacterial infection. You did not come here with it. You got it here, but now we know what it is, and we can fight it. It's going to be a very hard fight. It's a very serious, rare disease, but we have super drugs. It's an infectious disease but we know how to treat it. from now on, the infectious disease, doctors will be taking over all of the medicines and the treatment. That was when we went into the unknown.

Scott was even sicker, still had pnuemonia, plus add a bacterial infection called psuedomonas Florescens. He had a rare form of psuedomonas attacking his lungs. This was explained to us as very serious and it would be a long hard fight. He could barely move, his oxygen was up to 7 or 8 liters at times. These super drugs they gave him have strong side affects. Hallucinations, severe itching, it was terrible, nothing was working. The ID Dr's decided to mix the drugs into a cocktail made specifically for him. After a couple more days they got a mixture that started to work. From the 20th oh May until the 10th of July he suffered everyday, multiple shots daily, blood work and more cultures. IVS around the clock of such strong medicine he was in and out . He lost over50 lbs, all his muscle tone was gone. Thankfully for him , he doesn't remember a lot of the things he endured. I do though I stayed with him day and night. Turns out it had an effect on my health. He had a Pic line put in his chest.

July 10th he went to Miller's nursing home for rehab. Except they wouldn't rehab him. That was a nightmare! The manager tried to get the lab to change Scotts medicine. He put him in isolation , even though he wasn't contagious. I had to take him on July 21st to the hospital in South Bend I drove him back to Memorial ,because he had pain in his chest, in my car with oxygen. Miller's wouldn't call an ambulance to take him there, his Dr even gave them the order, he needed to be there ASAP. I drove him. That was another 4 days in the hospital. Only to go back to Miller's to be sent home the27th. Rehab was to come to the house. No one came for 3 wks. Scott rehabed himself to be able to stand, and he could use a walker to go a few ft at a time.

Aug 17th Scott had to return to the hospital with Psuedomonas pneumonia. He was there until Aug 24th. Here we are again still waiting for some kind of rehabilitation. He is so weak this time everything he had gained is gone. He can't walk 10 ft without being out of breath, even though he has oxygen 24/7. Before he got psuedomonas he was super healthy. At 71, he only took a high blood pressure med, because he was borderline. He did all of our maintenance at home. He was very healthy. Now he is confined to out home. Itry to take him places in a wheelchair, but he doesn't like me having to push him for very long. His lungs only have 60% volume and the Dr say scar tissue is still building. He may have less volume in the end.

Our bills are over a million dollars and continues to grow with more scans, xrays, Dr visits, blood work. Our insurance has covered so much of it but it's left us with over $ 7,000 Co pay at this time. We live on Social Security. The Dr's tell us we will have a different way of life now. He got Psuedomonas Florescens in the hospital, we shouldn't have to pay all these bills. He was in isolation on the vent and in critical care, how did he get a bacterial infectious disease? If you can help me get him an oxygen machine so he doesnt have to try to pull the oxygen tank around or so I can get him a mobility scooter. He feels very secluded and knows it hard for me to push the wheelchair. Lifting it in and out of the car is not easy for me. I will help him with everything I have in me, but we just can't pay all of the thousands of dollars the Dr's and hospital wants for the test, CT scans MRIs, and xrays. We could use some help, getting these things especially rehab which we will need to pay privately.
