My name is Alex Bowen, son and caretaker of Patti Bowen. In August of 2024, my mother fell ill and was hospitalized for 6 days. Upon leaving the hospital, she fell in the parking lot and required immediate life-saving surgery on an 8-inch long by 4-inch wide hematoma that formed while she was taking blood thinners. My mother almost died from blood loss and spent 4 months in nursing home care. Upon release, she complained of stomach issues and not being able to use the restroom correctly but continued to push on.
Last week, my mother was rushed in a weakened state to the hospital where it was found that she has a cancerous mass on her kidney. She will undergo surgery later this week to remove her whole kidney in hopes that it won't spread. We are still in the very early stages with the cancer diagnosis. She also has a bowel obstruction that will also require surgery. Updates will be posted.
During the last 6 months, my mother has been insured, but most of her day-to-day needs, such as transportation, lift assist by the city fire department, and wound care, have been left up to me and what funds she does have available. We have ideas for at-home aide care and a lift commode that will help us. But she will also need a lift chair and a new hospital bed for her safety. That is why we are asking for $10,000 for help with aide, transportation, and at-home medical assistance. Because yes, we have tried through two different companies and insurance to get aid workers but have received zero assistance from the state.
Update Saturday march 8th: Mom's biopsy for her lungs came back as lung cancer. They are testing to see if it's spread from her kidney next week.
