Please consider helping us with any donations. This past Saturday, July 30, 2022, we said goodbye to Michael D. Mitchell, Father to only son Matthew E. Mitchell, brother to Ralph, Peter, and Thomas, brother-in-law to Janice and Sophia, and friend and cousin to many. He left us after a long bout with cancer that he bravely fought longer than the doctors expected. I, Janice Mitchell, am organizing this Go Fund Me due to the challenges his son, Matthew, encountered after moving to Orlando. Matthew planned on making arrangements for his Dad to move down after accommodations were set up. 3 days after, Michael called an ambulance and went to the hospital. He was initially kept in I.C.U. and then transferred to the St Alban’s VA hospice floor. Plans to transport him from there to Orlando never materialized. Michael went to be with the Lord in his sleep after a month there. Michael’s cat had been left alone in his apartment, and unusual circumstances caused NYC Housing to change the locks. Michael’s son Matthew was not allowed to enter the apt as he was not on the lease. His friend, who had the old keys to check on Matthew’s dad in the past, was not allowed in either. Hence the insanity of bureaucracy began, and Matthew had to fly up to NYC 3 times in one month trying to save the cat, get a Power of Attorney signed by his Dad while he was still alive, and find important documents, including his dad’s Army discharge papers for funeral arrangements since Michael was a disabled Veteran. Housing made it impossible for him to work out getting into the apt. Miraculously, Mathew still had an Alexa webcam and saw that the cat was still alive. After many calls to housing and other agencies, the cat was eventually saved by an animal rescue. However, Matthew now has to fly up a fourth time this month to try to find whatever documents he needs, but now has to wait to receive the death certificate for housing to let Matthew in officially. Matthew, unfortunately, was never put on Michael’s Life Insurance policy, so that will be one more challenge. The family has had to lay out expenses for all the flights back and forth, including initial costs to the funeral home. If the normal grieving process wasn’t enough, we now have the stress of these complications. Thank you to all that have extended their prayers and condolences. We will get through this. God bless you all.
