I am starting this Go Fund Me account to help a very special family that so many of us have been praying for over the past almost 4 months. Lynsey Patrick suffered brain damage due to overcorrection of her sodium too quickly after entering the hospital for treatment back in July. Lynsey and her family were transferred to Cabell Huntington where an MRI was done. Lynsey’ mother was told that Lynsey had brain damage. They had no idea why anything like that had happened. Doctors informed them that she may never wake up. She was given a 25% chance of never waking up, 25% chance of a full recovery and a 50% chance of recovering with some deficits. Lynsey began to respond to her mother’s voice that same day, opening her eyes up slightly and over the next week began opening her eyes fully, responding to sound, touch and pain, but could not show any facial expression, talk or move. Lynsey was on a vent and had a NG tube in her nose and was dependent on the vent to breath. She was in ICU for weeks and began to show some signs of movement even though a doctor had told family to deal with the reality that he was 99% sure that she would never do anything. Lynsey began pulling her arms in and moving hands some that day, which showed just how determined she was. She and her mother remained in Cabell Huntington for a little over 2 ½ months. After working with some wonderful therapists at Cabell she began showing some movement and could turn her head, smile, show facial expression, but could not move arms or legs enough to be ambulatory. Her hands became constricted and hard to open up her fingers over time. Doctors then were able to remove the vent, and a trach was put in as well as a peg tube for feeding. After some time, she was able to work with staff to be weaned off vent support and then completely off the oxygen. She was making some improvements with some bumps in the road with other physical infections, issues, and some really rough neuro storms but she was able to overcome these with help from the medical staff. She made enough progress to get a referral to Cardinal Hill medical center in Lexington. They are there now and while there Lynsey has been able to get the trach removed, has been working with speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy and is showing progress. She is able to move some and has gotten her voice back Praise God. She is learning to operate a power wheelchair but cannot move her legs enough to begin to walk yet. They have to leave the hospital next week because insurance will not pay for any further treatment there. Lynsey will have to travel back and forth to Lexington for medical appointments as well as attend physical therapy to continue to work on trying to walk and use her arms enough to become independent. Lynsey is a fighter and has come a long way after being told she may never wake up. Though her parents have full time jobs, they are not able to purchase a wheelchair accessible van so that she can attend appointments and be able to get out and do things to feel more a part of the community after being stuck in a hospital bed for so long.
