TAYLOR COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) - One Lafayette County man died early Tuesday morning and a Missouri man is in critical condition after two semi-trucks collided head-on in Taylor County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened just before 8:45 a.m. on U.S. 221, north of Boyd Road, FHP wrote in a press release Tuesday afternoon.
A semi-truck, driven by a 71-year-old Lafayette County man was traveling north on U.S. 221, according to the state agency, and a second semi-truck, driven by a 52-year-old Missouri man, was traveling south on U.S. 221.
For unknown reasons, FHP said the semi-truck driven by the 71-year-old man collided with a guardrail on the east shoulder before crossing over into the southbound lane.
Moments later, the two semi-trucks collided head-on.
The 71-year-old’s semi-truck continued off the west side of the roadway, over the guardrail and broke into several pieces, according to FHP.
The 52-year-old’s semi-truck jackknifed and then came to a rest, blocking both lanes of U.S. 211, FHP wrote.
The 71-year-old Lafayette County man was pronounced dead on scene. The next of kin has been notified.
The 52-year-old Misssouri man was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital by Life Flight due to sustaining critical injuries, according to the press release.
At the time of the crash, neither drivers wore a seatbelt, according to the state agency.
