My son, Joe Garrett Lynn, made an extraordinary sacrifice for his father, Larry Lynn, by donating two-thirds of his liver this week to give Larry a second chance at life.
Their journey has been filled with challenges, as both Joe and Larry had to physically prepare for the surgery, and now face an extended period of recovery. Joe underwent an 8-hour surgery, while Larry’s procedure lasted 12 hours at Tampa General Hospital. Both surgeries were successful so far, but the road ahead is long at this point. They are both recuperating at TGH.
Larry had been waiting for a very long time for a transplant donation. At one point, he even made it to the pre-op room in the hospital, only to have the surgery cancelled.
So, when we were told about this living donor option, Joe Garrett volunteered without blinking.
There have been many tears of joy and fear along the way. On a personal note – The first thing Joe and Larry wanted to do after surgery, when they were able, was be wheeled together to make sure they were both okay. This moment was deeply moving for everyone involved, and it has been a powerful experience for the medical teams and for our family. This experience has changed both of their lives, and we are most proud of Joe Garrett.
Joe was honored with a flag raising ceremony at TGH while they both were in surgery. Joe is considered a hero by the medical professionals at Tampa General Hospital. Many people never make it to surgery due to the long wait for organ donors. This surgery is now an option. And, it’s important to share this story, as many are not aware of this living donor option.
By supporting this fundraiser, you are helping Joe and Larry focus on healing and rebuilding their lives, surrounded by the love and gratitude of their family and community. So you can give whatever your heart and budget will allow. We are very grateful.
Throughout this process, Joe and Larry have relied on the support of family and friends, including myself, to help with daily needs and emotional encouragement. The financial strain is significant, with recovery expenses, lost wages, travel and housing costs, and the need for professional services to support their healing and regeneration. But through all of this, their determination and love for each other have inspired everyone around them.
Donate – it may save a life. And we thank you all.
And, please share this story so others who are sick may know about this option and find hope.
Love to you all.
And, I will keep you updated on how they do.
