UPDATE: We reached the goal in less than 24 hours! My mind is blown and my heart is thankful! Between the funds here and what other amazing people have donated via Zelle/Venmo, Dusty Pepper is good to go for surgery. Between now and then, I will work on teaching her how to communicate, dog skills, and try to fill her up with confidence. Just today, I found a treat that she will eat so we have many training sessions in front of us.

Hi there!
On Tuesday, October 8th a dog was placed inside my yard around 9:42am according to the security video. I found a bump on the stomach which made me think the dog was a boy. Later, I realized he was a she. I made a vet appointment because of the bump. I also put her picture on websites (24petconnect, Nextdoor, LA County Shelter, PawBoost) to try to find the owner; it's clear she has been loved and in a home.
On Wednesday, October 9th, I realized her "girly bits" were not quite right. I assumed the worst, but it turns out she's just in heat; in my defense two vets conferred about this to make sure she didn't have something more awful and life threatening going on. The bump ended up being a non-reducible umbilical hernia which can be addressed when she is spayed. However, I need to wait for her to stop being in heat before her surgery can be scheduled.
I got her vaccinations, put a microchip in her, got her nails trimmed (two shirts have already been ruined by her), and started her on flea/tick prevention. We go back for boosters on 10/30. She'll need some blood work to make sure she can have surgery and then the surgery. The estimate comes in at $1,499.
I am calling her Dusty Pepper because:
- For years my husband has been saying he wants to name a pet "Dusty" so when the vet asked for a name this is what came out of my mouth
- My husband met her and said she's not really a "Dusty" but more like a "Pepper"
About Dusty Pepper (I know very little):
- Sweet
- Cautious but curious
- Under socialized
- Velcro to the max
- 18 pounds
- About 1 year old
- Lap Dog
- I haven't walked her yet; I don't have a harness or collar that fits because larger dogs are my jam however, I have ordered them.
- Car rides are scary
- Vet visits are scary
- When she is scared she shakes
- Vet guesses she is a Chihuahua and Spaniel mix
I will work on socializing her at her own pace and getting her to realize four feet on the ground is always the way to go. Once she's healed from surgery, I will look for an adopter. She's too little for the rescue I'm involved with (i.e. Fetchin' Retrievers Rescue) to intercede and take over her care so if anyone in the Southern California area is looking for a dog like her or knows someone looking for a dog like her let me know. Hoping to adopt her out by mid to late November; but everything depends upon her recovery from surgery.
If you can help financially, please do so. I guarantee the funds you donate will go to Dusty Pepper's veterinarian care.
Thank you,
Jessica (J-dogg) Sutton
