In December 2024, my dad Darrell’s health drastically declined. After unexpectedly losing his ability to walk, he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, too much spinal fluid on his brain. Darrell underwent emergency surgery to place a shunt in his brain and spent weeks in recovery in ICU. Unfortunately, his recovery has been riddled with complications.
In January 2025, he contracted MRSA in the shunt area and was in Neuro ICU for over 90 days. He was released to a medical rehabilitation center where he spent 2 weeks trying to regain his strength to walk and perform everyday tasks.
Again, in April, his recovery encountered complications when he became unresponsive and had signs of sepsis. Darrell was readmitted into ICU where he spent several more weeks due to surgeries and recovery. This time, due to insurance restrictions, he was not able to stay at a medical rehabilitation and was released to go home.
This week, he again became unresponsive and is back in Neuro ICU and has a fungal infection again. Cheryl, his wife and my mom, has exhausted all of her leave and is now on leave without pay to be by his side while they are trying to determine what is causing his current unresponsiveness.
Update-he is awake and responsive. Currently working to rid the infection and getting a game plan for moving forward.
When he is responsive, Darrell is unable to walk unassisted and requires around-the-clock care. It is uncertain how long his recovery will take. Funds raised would go to medical expenses, purchasing safety equipment, and making his areas at home safe and handicap accessible.
