Annabeth Lee Smith is a courageous 18-year-old young woman living with a rare and life-limiting condition called Mitochondrial Depletion Syndrome, which she was diagnosed with at the age of 14. In addition to this complex disorder, Annabeth also battles asthma, esophageal spasms, seizures, and relies on a G-tube for nutrition, as she cannot eat or drink by mouth.

Despite her daily medical challenges, Annabeth continues to face life with incredible strength and determination. In February 2025, she endured a five-week hospitalization, underscoring the seriousness and unpredictability of her condition.

Now, Annabeth and her family are raising funds for a specially trained medical alert and response service dog. This dog will be a vital partner—able to detect seizures, breathing issues, and other medical emergencies—providing both lifesaving assistance and constant companionship.

A service dog will not only improve Annabeth’s safety but also offer her greater independence and emotional support as she navigates the complexities of her condition. Her story is one of resilience, hope, and the power of community coming together to help a young woman live life more fully.
