Donate a Biopsy Gun in memory of Sarath Jayasuriya
Donation protected
In memory of my beloved late husband Sarath Jayasuriya who passed away from cancer on 28th November 2020, my dear friend Nandani Gankanda and I explored the opportunity of making a meaningful contribution to the underprivileged cancer patients in Sri Lanka.
We have identified the very worthy project to donate a Biopsy Gun with 200 biopsy needles to the Oncology Unit at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University Hospital in Sri Lanka, which is desperately needed for the early diagnosis of cancer in patients, that is paramount to their chance of survival.
I have been in communication with Dr. Sachini Rasnayake, Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Clinical Oncology at the faculty of medicine of the UHKDU. Below is an extract of her words describing the sad plight suffered by the patients who attend the hospital for treatment.
"There are around 50 cancer patients we see and treat daily at UHKDU and all are free of charge. However certain instruments are lacking and patients have to buy them. True cut biopsy needle is one such instrument that patients should buy from outside as it is not expensive and for some poor patients it is very hard for them to do so. Patients and relatives have to go all around Colombo trying to find the needle and patients from poor socio-economic backgrounds find it extremely difficult.
This biopsy needle is essential in cancer diagnosis and if we have the true cut biopsy gun with us; that will prevent delay in diagnosing cancer as we can perform the test at the very first visit when it is available with Oncology unit UHKDU".
We intend to donate this instrument within two weeks and appreciate very much your donation towards this worthy cause.
