Our dad was the least pretentious person we ever knew.  He earned a doctorate in Agronomy, but we never once heard him use the honorific.   He clipped coupons and saved paper plates not because he had to, but because he was that frugal.

Our dad grew up in a farmhouse without a bathroom or electricity.  His father instilled the importance of education and expected his boys to go to college.  Our dad did the same for his children and grandchildren.   Even for me (Darren) who failed completely at his first try at college.  When I decided to return, he was not only willing but eager to pay for my tuition. 

Our dad was unconventionally generous.  As a family we never gave lavish gifts for Christmas, but on multiple occasions he provided amazing gifts and support to me, my sisters, and my niece and nephew just because he thought we might need it.

Our dad battled Myelodysplastic syndrome for a long time.  SLU Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic's treatment plan gave him 5 years of remission.  And it's not the years we're grateful for.  It's the things he got to do with those 5 years.
