Donald Hastings passed away on August 31, 2021 after a brief bout with pancreatic cancer. He was 85 years old and lived a full and happy life. He leaves behind his wife, Pam, three children, Ami, Gary and Mindy, two granddaughters, Jennah and Jessie, daughter-in-law, Emily and son-in law, Mike. He would do anything for his family and we would have done anything for him.
Don was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania and graduated from Uniontown High School. He attended Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia where he met his wife, Pam. After earning their degrees they located to Elkridge, Maryland where Don took a job as a teacher and later a principal. They eventually relocated to Ocean City, Maryland where he became Assistant Superintendent of the Worcester County Schools. He retired from the school system in 1988.
He was very active in the community, serving on numerous local, county and state advisory committees and boards. He was very proud of his work with the United Way. Don was also a long time member of the Ocean City-Berlin Optimist Club and was one of the founders of the Seaside Boat Show.
Don was well known locally for the business he started with his wife, Donald's Duck Shoppe. At one point the business grew to include three locations but the flagship store was the Gold Coast Mall shop which finally shuttered it's doors for good in December of 2014. During his time running the "duck shoppes" he developed relationships with many local artists which led him to organize and promote several successful art & craft festivals in Ocean City, Baltimore and Timonium.
Of all his accomplishments, he was most proud of his role as a teacher. Everything was about the kids for him. This was reflected in his professional work in Education, his volunteer work with the Optimist Club and of course in his constant and enduring love for his own children and grandchildren.
To help honor his memory, we have decided to establish the Donald A. Hastings Memorial Scholarship Fund to help a kid go to college each year, hopefully to pursue a career in Education. He would have loved the idea and we are excited to do this in his name.
