Donahue Home Renovation Fund

My name is Joe Donahue. My wife, Katie Donahue, and I have found ourselves in severe need of help.

We own a house in Jacksonville, AL.  I recently accepted a job in Birmingham, AL in the hopes that it would greatly increase my family's quality of life. We found a house to rent in Birmingham, we thought we knew what we were going to do with our old house, and we proceeded to start trying to relocate to Birmingham.

Nothing has gone as planned. Nothing. We found mold once we started moving things out of the house in Jacksonville. Our plans for what we were going to do with the house fell through. Now we're in a position where we are paying the mortgage for the old house and the rent for the new house at the same time. We can't afford both. It's just not possible.

The house was built in the 50's, and it's very likely that the exterior was painted using lead based paint. We cannot legally sell or rent the house until the paint is taken care of. Some of the wood has degraded and needs to be replaced as well.

The mold needs to be removed. The windows are original to the house, and need to be replaced or the mold will just keep coming back. The interior of the house was painted by the previous owner, but it needs to be repainted.

We have all this that needs to be done, and we just don't have the money to do it. We have two small children, and they need stability in their lives. Going back and forth between houses has been very hard on them.
Foreclosing on the house isn't an option.

$2,000 is the bare minimum of what we need in order to actually be able to do something with the house. We still wouldn't be able to sell or rent it. Realistically the house needs about $10,000 worth of work. We're in a really bad position, and we need help.

No help is too small. Like I said, our kids need stability. The faster we can get work done, and be able to figure out what we're going to do housing wise, the earlier they can have that stability.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Below is a breakdown of costs, starting with what we absolutely must cover.

Painting/Replacing Wood - $1,000
Killing Mold/Replacing 2 Windows - $1,000

--------------------------------------------------

Replacing other 9 Windows - $5,000
Painting the inside - $500
Unknown/Misc. Costs- $2,500

There are a few random things that need to be done, carpet needs to be removed, the lattice around the back porch needs to be replaced, there's a dilapidated shed in the back yard that needs to be torn down and removed, and every project has unexpected costs like possibly having to replace wood around windows being replaced. All of these costs comprise the last category.
