The Dona Ana Boxing Club, located at 5597 Elks Drive in Las Cruces, New Mexico, was opened in the fall of 2008 with state funding. We have not had a budget since then but we do get help from Dona Ana County Parks Facilities department where we get cleaning supplies. Once in a while the county will have coffers to buy some of the bigger equipment like weight machines for the club. Currently we have four coaches, Joe Triste, Danny Melendrez, Rick Vasquez, JJ Sambrano and several young boxers ranging in ages from 8 to 20. The founder of the club, Larry Clark (A former coach), had served the young community for five years by training boxers in his back yard with equipment gathered throughout the years. The emphasis was and still is to keep our community youth busy and out of trouble. This plan seems to work, for the most part, with assistance from the outside, and of course the volunteer coaches. Keep in mind this organization is non-profit and all of the coach’s time is strictly volunteered. There are no salaried personnel at the club.
Our club is now registered under USA Boxing. Some of our kids are nationally ranked, and need to travel all over the U.S. to compete at these high level tournaments to maintain or climb up the national ranks. There is also a need for equipment, which brings us to why I write this letter. There is no charge for anyone wishing to join the boxing club. The instruction / training and equipment for them to use is strictly free. Because of the influx of kids signing up recently, sometimes we have up to 30 boxers in the gym at any one time, equipment is either scarce or is in need of replacement. Boxing gloves can cost as much as $60 per pair. We use different types of gloves for different uses such as training on punching bags, sparring, and for competition. Because of the diverse ages, glove sizes and weights also differ. Probably the most important piece of equipment we are in need of is headgear. We have not been able to replace the limited amount that has been deteriorating thus far. Headgear can cost as much as $80 and has to be USA Boxing approved. Other minor equipment such as jump ropes, hand wraps and tape, boxing uniforms, groin protectors (can cost as much as $60), and the list can go on and on, need to be replaced or added to the inventory.
We do not expect any one entity to donate all that is needed and if the time is not right for your organization to donate at this time, we completely understand. Please do not feel compelled, but do keep us in mind when the time is right. We invite you to visit anytime you can, Monday through Thursday. The club is open from 6 p.m to about 7:30 p.m or when the last boxer is done for the day. The training starts promptly at 6:00 p.m, so all kids are usually in by then. Feel free to call or email me anytime. Thank you for what you do for the community and especially the youth.
