This past May, my brother-in-law, Jose Ruiz, experienced what seemed to be a common case of “lower back pain” caused by lack of physical activity coupled with long hours of work in front of a computer. Little did we know that our lives would soon take a sharp and sudden turn into an unthinkable scenario. Jose’s “lower back pain” resulted to be stage 4 of pancreatic cancer. Our world shattered into a million pieces. But we put ourselves into the hands of God and science.

The odds were never on our side. However, Jose is giving the fight of a lifetime out of love for his wife, my sister Silvia, and their kids Valentina (9 y/o) and Sebastian (4 y/o). We are working with a team of doctors from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Jose fights each and every day with all his might to be around one more day. To get a chance to see his kids and his wife one more time. The doctors have been very clear: there is treatment, but no cure.

Jose is a 47-year-old husband and dad. His daughter Valentina just started 4th grade and Sebastian Pre-K. When Sebis grows up, he wants to be a superhero. I have no doubts he will become one. His dad has proven to be a real-life superhero, driven by a deep love for his family and life itself.

The funds raised through this campaign will help cover the costs of treatment, household expenses, and educational expenses of his two young children. No amount could ever be “too small”, any contribution will be greatly appreciated and will mean the world to Jose and his family.

En mayo de este año, mi cuñado, José Ruiz, experimentó lo que aparentaba ser un caso común de “dolor lumbar” causado por inactividad física y largas horas de trabajo frente a una computadora. Jamás imaginamos el giro tan abrupto e inesperado que muy pronto darían nuestras vidas cuando diagnosticaron lo impensable. Aquél “dolor de espalda baja” resultó ser un cáncer de páncreas en etapa 4. En un instante, nuestro mundo se rompió en un millón de pedazos. Pero nos pusimos en las manos de Dios y la ciencia.

Las probabilidades de vencer el cáncer nunca estuvieron de nuestro lado. Sin embargo, José está dando la pelea de su vida por amor a su esposa, mi hermana Silvia, y sus hijos Valentina (9 años) y Sebastián (4 años). Estamos trabajando con un equipo de médicos del Instituto de Cáncer Dana-Farber en Boston y del South Shore Hospital en Weymouth, Massachusetts. José lucha a diario, con todas sus fuerzas, por ganar un día más en esta vida. Por tener la oportunidad de ver a sus hijos y esposa una vez más. Los médicos han sido muy claros: hay tratamiento, pero no cura.

José es un esposo y padre de 47 años. Su hija Valentina acaba de comenzar el cuarto grado y Sebastián el Pre-K. Cuando Sebis crezca, quiere ser un superhéroe. No tengo dudas de que se convertirá en uno. Su padre ha demostrado ser un superhéroe de la vida real, impulsado por un profundo amor a su familia y a la vida misma.

Los fondos recaudados a través de esta campaña ayudarán a cubrir los gastos médicos, del hogar, y educativos de sus dos hijos. No existen donativos "pequeños"; por el contrario, cualquier contribución será sumamente apreciada y significará mucho para José y su familia.

Los mantendremos informados de esta batalla por un día más de vida… una vida llena y movida por amor.
