On November 2, 2023 Don was involved in a fatal car accident on I35. Since then, he has been in the Trauma ICU in OU hospital. His injuries are very extensive. His back is broken in 2 places, his neck is broken, he has a collapsed lung, his sternum is broken, his heart was bruised, all of his ribs are shattered & broken in multiple places, he has a brain bleed, & his clavicle is dislocated from his sternum on both sides.
Don has worked in the mechanic & wrecker business for over 35 years. It’s the only livelihood he knows, and has been doing it his entire adult life. Don has always taken so much pride in helping people & being the guy there for people when they need it.
Many of you may have had some of his awesome BBQ or BBQ sauce. In the past, he also coordinated & set up several BBQ cookoffs in Guthrie to help raise money for others and charity, which you may have attended. Don loves sharing some good BBQ & getting to watch the smiles that he gets when they do. He loves making people happy.
He loves to bring everybody together for some good food and a good time. If you know him, he lives to give everyone a hard time & joke about something every opportunity he can get. He never has a shortage of wise cracks.
His family is his life & he misses his 4 year old grand-daughter Macy terribly. She doesn’t understand why the Doctors are taking so long for her to be able to see her Baba, but she picked one of her teddy bears out, gave him a hug & kiss, and told him to go be with Baba at the Doctor’s.
Don is the sole income earner for his family & when this accident happened, everything stopped. His wife & 2 daughters are having to figure it all out, as well as what to do next. All of this while they live & sleep in the ICU waiting room day after day, night after night, fighting for him as well as being his advocate.
He has an extremely long recovery ahead of him.
His heart stopped at 2am on November 13th for 5 minutes & they got him back. When this happened, the chest compressions that saved his life, also negated any sort of healing any of the broken bones had accomplished.
Their entire lives have come to a screeching halt as he fights for his life day after day. Don is 59, and once he is finally recovered, they will also have to start their entire lives over. They have a very long journey ahead & are nothing but grateful for absolutely every single gesture. Thank you so much for your prayers & support.
