For those who may not know Dominique, she is an ambitious, charismatic, imaginative, and fearless young woman who was on her path to graduation. She has amazing goals, pathing the way to college and her future career path. Dominique desires to be a veterinarian and to start her own YouTube channel with helping animals become well. She has a passion for animals and healing. On May 29th nobody knew Dominique’s life would drastically change. Dominique experienced a grand mal seizure on May 29th. This was the first major sign we experienced of Encephalitis. Dominique having a seizure at home was one of the most frightening things that I have ever experienced. Dominque’s face turned blue as she could not breathe, Justin was holding her to protect her from hitting anything, from where she fell out at the time of her seizure. Emergency medical services arrived shortly after my 911 call and took Dominique to the hospital. Once Dominique arrived at the first hospital, she experienced a secondary seizure resulting with heart rate drop and loss of oxygen. The hospital immediately had to place a breathing tube in her throat, they could not determine the reasoning for her seizures and low oxygen state. All tests were coming back clear and healthy. It was then decided to fly Dominique to OHSU this hospital has a Neurology department and modern machines to research reasoning for seizure activity. Since May 29th Dominique has been in hospitalization care. For those who do not know what Encephalitis is, it is an auto-immune disease. In which causes immobility, potential brain damage, behavioral and emotional changes including anxiety, aggression, impulsivity, disinhibition, hallucinations, memory loss, psychosis and extreme confusion and delusion. In many cases the person affected must re-learn many of life’s basics when recovering. Even simple things like learning how to walk again. Recovery can take a couple of months to reach a baseline and up to a year to recover any memory loss; Dominique has been deemed inpatient for her recovery at this time. Everything in me wants her to recover at home. I know Dominique would desire to recover within the comfort of her own home, with her family attending outpatient therapy. Our family will have to continue to work with Dominique with recovery improvements, to have her home as soon as we can based upon her mental state. Hospital bills are already being submitted and therapy will be continued after her release. I have created a go fund me to reach out to as many people as possible to support Dominique’s recovery so that she can receive all that will be medically needed on her road to recovery. I would love to see Dominique recover and get back to baseline continuing to pave the path of her future. Dominique has missed her high school graduation and prom, when Dominique recovers, I would also love to give her a personalized graduation and close friends prom experience. Graduation and prom are special moments that she has missed, that she will not have the opportunity to experience again. I thank all who have read her story, shared, and supported Dominique’s recovery. Please, continue to keep Dominique in your prayers for a healthy recovery. As doctors have said to me, Dominique is the “Brain on Fire” girl. “Brain on Fire” Is a movie based upon a true story that represents a girl who had encephalitis on Netflix.
