DOMINICA MEDICAL RELIEF, HALIFAX

On the night of Monday, September the 19th 2017, Category 5 Hurricane Maria, slammed into the Caribbean island of Dominica, killing 28 inhabitants  [with 32 more missing and presumed dead] and injuring many more, with widespread devastation to homes, infrastructure, businesses, hotels and the hospitals and health centers.

My name is Mark Sorhaindo, and I am a physician who practices here in Nova Scotia. I was able to visit Dominica, my home country, and was able to see and experience the severe devastation caused by Hurricane Maria first hand. The sights, sounds and smells were overwhelming to say the least, but it is the fear for the wellbeing and a comforting future for the very old, the very young and the expectant and young mothers that grabbed my attention most.

On my return to Nova Scotai, I felt compelled to attempt to begin a fund raising effort for Dominica,  known as the Nature island of the Caribbean, in the wake of this tragedy. This in an effort to support the now battered and stressed Medical services on the island, in performing much needed services in the following areas: 1. Acute assistance to the Maternal and Child Health programs at the main Princess Margaret Hospital along with the psychological support services for the elderly; 2. Medium Term assistance island wide through the  Epidemiological and Surveillance program, and 3. a longer term support program to assist with Surgical [including Orthopaedics, ENT, General surgery, Plastics] and Anaesthetic needs and services.

100% of the donations received will go to helping to fund supply purchases and services in assisting with these  above through physician and nurse driven programs, both local and voluntary.  These programs already exist but as I observed, they are in dire need of supplies and relief service efforts.

Your kind donations are urgently needed and in that light, a Charity Soccer match, between the Anesthesia and Orthopaedic departments of the QE II, will be played at Soccer Nova Scotia in Clayton Park, Halifax, on Saturday October 28th at the BMO Soccer [SNS] Center there. Please come and feel free to donate to this urgent and compelling cause.

I remain in direct contact with physicians in Dominica,
including the Chief Medical Officer of Health, and specialists at the Princess Margaret Hospital, who will help to guide your kind donations to areas of most need within the fields noted above.

With sincerest gratitude.

Mark Sorhaindo on behalf of the people of Dominica.
