On Monday 4/20/20 we dropped off our Mom, Cindy Donze to Beebe Hospital in Lewes, DE for back pain and delirium, little did we know the unbelievable adventure we would start. After several days and numerous tests we found out that my mom had a bladder infection, streptococcus anginosu, a epidural abscess at T12/L1, osteomyelitis and discitis. On Friday 4/24 she was transferred to Christiana Hospital and was rushed into surgery on Saturday 4/25 for a T8-T12 and L1-L2 laminectomy and washout. She was started on a 6 week course of IV medication for her streptococcus anginosu by infectious disease. She spent several weeks there while they tried to get the right combination of pain management along with curing her delirium. On Friday 5/22 she was discharged from Christiana Hospital and sent to PAMS Rehabilitation Hospital of Dover which is an acute care rehab. My mom was in an immense amount of pain and refused to participate in therapy. After 38 days in hospitals my mothers insurance stated that they would no longer cover her in acute care. She was not participating in the therapy because of the immense pain she was in and was discharged on May 28th.She wound up being home until Tues. 6/2 when the at home PT, Nurse and her Primary Doctor told us to call and ambulance and have her transported back to Beebe Hospital because something bigger was wrong. A few hours later Beebe wanted to transfer her back to Christiana Hospital and after several hours of discussions and arguments with the hospital we managed to get my mom transferred to Thomas Jefferson Hospital on Wed 6/3.Thomas Jefferson ran tests on 6/3 and found significant bony erosion at L1-2 along with fluid, as well as moderated to severe stenosis. On Thursday 6/4 my mom was taken into her 2nd surgery where the decompressed T11-12 and T12-L1, drained fluid, and did a spinal fusion from T10-L3. The next day she was taken back into surgery to revise the left side of the fusion. Everything came back negative, there was no longer an infection but she was still very delirious. Jefferson had a neuro-psychiatrist as well as a geriatric specialist work with her and with additional adjustments to meds they were able to get her delirium somewhat under control. She was released from Jefferson Hospital on Friday 6/19 to PowerBack Rehab in Willow Grove, PA.PowerBack is a subacute care facility and she was making great progress until Friday 7/3 at which point her delirium was back in full swing and they wound up having her transported to Abington-Jefferson Hospital on 7/4.Abington-Jefferson Hospital did some tests and she had a bad bladder infection again. They started her on some IV antibiotics and did a follow-up MRI where they thought it looked like there were some changes in her spine. On Wed 7/8/20 Mom was transferred back down to Thomas Jefferson Hospital where they compared MRI's and they found hat there was additional bone erosion so they scheduled a 4th surgery. On Thurs 7/9 they performed another washout from T8-L4 and extended her fusion. During the surgery her neurosurgeon did not feel that that spinal fusion was going to be strong enough due to all of the erosion that had taken place so they kept her sedated overnight and took her in for her 5th and final surgery on 7/10. They performed an anterior fusion from T11-L2, did a bone graft and placed 2 drains. From 7/10 to 8/15 she spent 3 rounds in the ICU, battled pneumonia, severe malnutrition, lung failure and a blood clot in her arm. Finally on Saturday 8/15/20 my Mom was transferred to Grand View Hospital Acute Care Unit. Here she is learning how to brush her hair, feed, dress, wash herself, transfer from bed to chair, stand, and walk. She is getting so much better mentally, she has lost so much time but she is fighting hard to make her way home. This is where we need your help, since this adventure started 133 days ago our father sold their home in DE and purchased a new home in PA. They have custody and are raising our 13 year old and 4 year old nieces and with my moms medical situation they needed to move closer to family. They live off of social security and get no financial assistance from either of the girls parents. As you can only imagine the medical bills are steep but on top of that there are needs insurance will not cover. My mom will most likely be coming home in a wheelchair, and even if she is walking by then she will not be able to manager the 5 steps to get in and out of the house so we need to install a 40 foot ramp. She will need a lift chair and if possible we would like to get my parents a new bed so that they can continue to sleep in bed together. Anyone that knows my parents knows they have so much love and are always first in line to help anyone they know and now they need our help. Melissa and I have been doing as much as we can but we do not have the funds to take care of this for our parents and are hoping that if all of our friends and family band together we can take this financial burden off of our father. It takes a village and we are so blessed and grateful for you all. We know times are hard, if you are unable to donate please share this so we can get the help we need.
