Dollars for Dixie: Medical Treatment for Rescued Dog

Donation protected
Dollars for Dixie is a chance to rewrite the story of a dog who nearly slipped through the cracks. Dixie, an Australian Shepherd, was surrendered during a time of housing insecurity and found herself being turned away from the shelter (capacity issues) to being surrendered to a local police department. With no room at the shelter and no one at the department able to take her, her next steps were unsure. That’s when one of the officers reached out.

We welcomed her, though she came with nothing but an old collar, a teddy bear from the police, and no history at all—not her age, her health, or even her name. We gave her the name Dixie, and she has already given us plenty of attitude to match it.

When Dixie first arrived, she was thin and matted. You would stroke bones when you went to pet her fur, and clumps of mattes hung around her. But, she’s blossomed—splashing in the creek, nudging us for attention with her paw, and wagging her stubby tail so hard it could power a small engine. She’s goofy, stubborn, and endlessly sweet, from laying her head in her food bowl to barking indignantly when her kibble runs low. For a dog who’s been through so much, her joy for life is contagious (our cattle disagree, but that’s another story). But our first vet visit brought hard news: Dixie is heartworm and Lyme disease positive. These treatments are urgent and costly, and while we didn’t plan on another dog, we can’t imagine turning her away now that she finally has a home.

This is where we humbly ask for help. Every dollar donated will go directly toward Dixie’s medical care—giving her a fighting chance to live the full, energetic life every Aussie deserves. She deserves stability, health, and love, not another round of abandonment. Your support means she won’t have to suffer or be passed along again. Even the smallest gift helps us get Dixie the care she needs and lets her tail keep wagging for years to come. We appreciate every dollar that is donated, and we understand how serious donating financially is in this economy. If you’re unable to donate, we get it! All we ask is to share her story, and throw up a prayer for Dixie. She’s a sweet girl, and we’ll take any kindness that can be given, financial or not.

If any funds are remaining, they will be donated to the local shelter to assist with the animals currently waiting for their time to shine in a new home.
