Dollars for Devereaux
After their 20-week anatomy scan, Josh and Chloe were informed that their son, Devereaux, has a rare medical condition known as CDH or a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. For those wondering, the diaphragm is a large muscle that separates the abdomen from the chest. When the tissues that form the diaphragm do not close completely, it leaves an opening in the muscle. The opening in the fetal diaphragm can allow the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and other large organs, such as the liver and spleen, to protrude into the chest. This protrusion causes the lung(s) to become compressed, which prevents their growth.
In the best interest of their baby boy, Josh and Chloe have relocated to St. Petersburg, Florida to seek treatment at John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. While the average survival rate in the U.S. is somewhere between 70 and 80%, infants treated at Johns Hopkins experience a survival rate greater than 90% even in severe cases of CDH.
Devereaux came into this world fighting on July 11th weighing 7 lbs 5 oz and measuring at a lengthy 19.5". The next day, July 12th, he was put on ECMO, which is considered by many to be the highest form of life support. Immediately afterward his vitals began to improve, and his repair surgery was done the following day, July 13th. The surgery began at approx 9:30 A.M. and finished at approx 4:50 P.M. for a total of over 7 hours on the operating table. This was longer than what was expected due to some complications during the procedure with air in his intestines and having difficulty placing them back into his abdomen. In just three days this baby has gone through more than most will experience in a lifetime.
Due to recent developments, Josh and Chloe have learned that they can expect to spend an additional month in Florida. Every donation to Dollars for Devereaux will help the Goffs with travel and medical expenses such as gas, accommodations, food, and medical bills. Let's work together to give this precious baby a fighting chance!
