Dollars for Demi

My best friend almost lost his life a month ago. Before I go into detail about the accident, let me tell you about my unbelievably blessed friend. Many of you know him by Demetrius, Meech, Demi, or maybe just as the one in the middle of the dance floor(lol if you know him). If you’ve met him, you know that his kindness and personality makes even the saltiest of people crack a smile unwillingly. When he answers the phone, his opening greeting is ALWAYS “Praise the Lord, How may I bless you?” It doesn’t matter who is calling, the greeting is the same. Demetrius graduated from the prestigious Howard University in 2016 with a bachelors in Political Science. Throughout his years there, he was a very active member in the community, and well liked by his peers. He worked multiple jobs all four years of college and graduated on time with honors and recommendations from his peers and previous employers. He was ready to take the world by storm.

From the outside looking in, you would think that he has it all together. His smile, humor, and sheer motivation makes you think “He doesn’t need help.” But, if there is anything that any of us have learned over the years, it's that the folks who need help the most are the ones who rarely ask.

Demetrius was in a car accident on April 9, 2018 and almost lost his life. He fell asleep at the wheel and rear ended a tractor trailer on his way home from a work event.  Immediately knocked unconscious, his car and body were dragged half a mile on the highway. The image is disturbing and makes me well with tears when I imagine MY best friend in the driver seat. You don’t realize how quickly these things can happen to ANYONE in your life. I’ll never forget the feeling that I felt from the moment I found out that he was in the hospital fighting for his life, and the agonizing hours that followed not knowing if he was alive or dead. When I finally tracked down which hospital he was staying in, the nurse politely forwarded me to his room’s landline and when he answered the phone he said “Praise the Lord, How may I bless you?” I lost it. I was overwhelmed with relief and so thankful that I could hear that greeting one more time.

Fast forward to a month later, Demi is still suffering physically and financially from the accident, and medical bills are through the roof.  Just because you get in an accident, unfortunately that doesn’t mean life pauses for you. Bills are coming in non-stop and I see first hand the stress that this is causing, and I feel helpless.  Not being able to go to work, and having intensive physical therapy sessions has put a strain on Demetrius and his entire family and has made recovery that much harder.

I don’t normally post on facebook, especially about anything personal, but I’ve seen people’s lives change because of the kindness in people’s hearts. I am asking for you all to consider donating to help Demi cover the costs for his medical bills. If you know him or if you don’t, this is a person that has been through hell and back, and still somehow manages to see the positive. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to pay medical bills and help ease the stress of other bills while he is not able to work full time. Any and all donations are welcome, no matter how small. In this world where people are constantly tearing each other down, I like to think that there are still people out there that will help when they can. From the depths of my heart, I thank you all for taking the time to read this and for any amount you can contribute. God Bless.
