On 4 August 2018, Dolfin's 3 Peaks Squad will begin their challenge to climb the tallest mountain in Scotland, the tallest mountain in England and the tallest mountain in Wales... within 24 hours.
The challenge is being undertaken to support the Muscle Help Foundation, a charity that delivers transformational experiences for children and young people with the muscle wasting disease Muscular Dystrophy and allied neuromuscular conditions. The foundation was created in 2003 by Michael McGrath who, after being diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy aged 18, made history twenty years later by becoming the first disabled person to lead expeditions to both the North and South Poles. Michael, who was a huge inspiration for Dolfin’s team to embark on the Three Peaks attempt, reminds us:
'Being enriched by life’s experiences, we learn more about ourselves and by default, we not only get closer to realising our own aspirations and dreams but we may also be given the gift to help others along the way. I salute the tremendous efforts of those undertaking the Dolfin Three Peaks Challenge. When you’re driving something forward, when you’ve set goals, when you’ve absolute belief in your purpose, much can be achieved, not least hiking the highest three peaks of England, Scotland and Wales in under 24 hours! Remember, its always about the journey, not the destination – be sure you finish as one, as a team, that way, you’ll be STRONGER TOGETHER'
The journey will begin with a departure from London at 7.30am by train, arriving in Glasgow Central at noon. We will then pick up two minibuses and enjoy a very scenic drive north through The Trossachs National Park, arriving at Fort William where we prepare to start the clock.
At exactly 6pm we begin hiking Ben Nevis, 1,345 metres (4,411 ft) above sea level and also the tallest mountain in the British Isles. We should be finished by 10/11 pm and will then drive through the night into England (switching drivers of course) until we reach Scafell Pike (978 metres, 3,209 ft) situated in the Lake District.
We will start climbing around 4 am and hope to complete the descent by 8 or 9 am, and will then get back into our trusty minibuses and drive for just under 5 hours to Snowdonia National Park in Wales. We will begin our final ascent before 2 pm and must, in order to have successfully completed the UK National 3 Peaks Challenge, have made it down the other side by 6 pm.
Muscle Help Foundation
Founded in 2003 by Michael McGrath and Miles Peckham, the Muscle Help Foundation is a charity working to support children and young people with the muscle wasting disease, Muscular Dystrophy (MD) and allied neuromuscular conditions.
Today, the charity has touched the lives of 1000’s of people across the UK, from families and local communities to schools and businesses, and its impact and reach continues to grow.
The charity can make a difference in several ways – from improved confidence, greater self-esteem and an increased sense of hopefulness, to a powerful collective identity that connects families together providing them with an essential platform to share knowledge. Moreover, unforgettable memories and lasting friendships are established.
Muscle Help Foundation invites everyone to join the growing tribe of Muscle Warrior fundraisers, participate in the upcoming events, and get involved in the innovative #powerof657 national campaign designed to drive awareness and generate vital funds to help Muscle Help move closer towards their goal of delivering 657 Muscle Dreams, one for every muscle in the human body. As of July 2018, the charity will have delivered 278 Muscle Dream experiences.
The charity needs your support, including time, skills and money, to make more of these highly personalised experiences a reality. Dolfin is delighted to have a chance to contribute to Muscle Help's life-changing Muscle Dream initiatives.
