Doherty Family, Ballyshannon : Belfast City Marathon

On the 4th of May 2025, our family will be running the Belfast City Marathon together to raise much-needed funds for the Ballyshannon Dynamos Basketball Team. Frankie will be traveling from San Francisco to join us in the run with his wife and daughter to show support from the side-lines. Meanwhile, Joanne, Nadine, and Dylan will be making their way up from Donegal to join Danika and Lee, who live in Belfast city.

The incredible Dynamos basketball team was started in September 2024 by Liam, Fiona, Patricia, Anthony (Waddle), Mollie, Sharon, and Aoife with the support of the Ballyshannon 88ers Basketball Club which has generously allowed the team to use their equipment and halls for the season.

The club hosts weekly sessions aimed at providing a fun and social activity for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Funding is crucial to purchase gear, equipment, and organize blitzes for the team to participate in.

As many of you know our sister Cherie has intellectual disabilities and being part of this team and participating in weekly training sessions means the world to her. Cherie and her teammates have found a sense of belonging and joy through the Ballyshannon 88ers Club and Dynamos Team. Every week, they look forward to the training sessions where they can connect with friends, learn new skills, and feel part of a supportive community. Seeing her excitement and happiness has been incredibly rewarding for our family.

We are immensely grateful to Liam and the dedicated volunteers who offer this wonderful opportunity for the team. The sense of camaraderie, the smiles, and the laughter during each session are truly heart-warming. These moments remind us of the importance of inclusivity and the power of sports to bring people with intellectual disabilities together.
