Dogs Without Collars Rescue - Help Save 28 Dogs
Donation protected
**Update** 4 dogs from the ESMA shelter in Cairo will arrive at Toronto Pearson airport on the 16th July. This beauty is one of them!! Your donations go to bringing more like this lucky girl.
In April of this year I adopted a beautiful German Shepherd from Egypt. When we picked her up from Pearson airport she was skinny and frightened and desperately hungry. Britta had been living in a shelter with over 2000 other dogs and had been chosen for us because of her wonderful temperament. In the 3 months she has been here, this fearful pup has become confident and resilient and a credit to the rescue organisation that selected her for us.
If you are a dog lover you probably know someone who has adopted a dog from another country where strays are left to fend for themselves in the streets, until a poorly funded rescue organisation brings them in to an overcrowded shelter.
With over 2000 dogs in some of the Cairo shelters, the rescue volunteers can do little more than keep the dogs from being run over, shot or further abused, but life expectancy is low and most do not survive more than a year or two.
Since 2015 Shelley Austin and Dominique Rousselle, founders of Dogs Without Collars Rescue have been working with Egyptian shelters to bring these beautiful dogs to Canada where they have been adopted by loving families.
Both Shelley and Dominique are experienced and knowledgeable about animal welfare and rescue, having both served on the Board of Directors for the Toronto Humane Society.
On June 28th 2022, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced a new measure to "protect Canadians and their pets” by reducing the risk of introducing dog rabies into Canada.
As of September 28th “World Rabies Day” “commercial" dogs from countries of “high risk” for dog rabies will no longer be permitted entry into Canada. This includes reputable rescue organisations bringing in dogs for adoption.
This blanket ruling ignores the supreme care taken to ensure the dogs are given a clean bill of health before leaving their country of origin. Dogs Without Collars Rescue always follows vigilantly the protocol required by the Toronto Humane Society.
We have only 2 months to bring as many dogs as possible to enjoy a new life in Canada, but there are considerable costs involved.
Hopefully, we can bring up to 30 more dogs to Canada before the ban takes effect. The cost for each dog just for travel is in the region of $1200. The adopters will cover some of these costs but because of this emergency situation we have successfully recruited foster families and now have additional, unusual expenses due to the tight timelines.
· Vet bills for spay/neuter surgery, flea and tick medication, blood parasite medication, extra deworming etc.
Any vet bills during the foster period
· Food for several months while being fostered
· Travel crates
· Taxes and customs fees
· Leashes, harness & collars
· Transportation costs from foster to adopter
Please help us bring these beautiful dogs home to live wonderful lives in our great country. Please donate today and share this with your friends, family, work colleagues etc. ANY amount helps.
Thank you for your compassion, generosity and love for our furry companions. They will spend the remainder of their lives in comfort and happiness because of you.
