Dogs rescue in La Guajira, Colombia

When travelling with friends in La Guajira Colombia, we found an extremely skinny dog with broken legs, almost unable to walk. After we followed her to feed her we discovered she had 5 puppies approx 2 weeks old. It seems that she was hit by a car long before giving birth to the puppies.

We did not think twice and decided to rescue her. We reached out to a local charity @Proyecto Tawala and organised “a day care" in Santa Marta for the whole family. Don Alvaro from Proyecto Tawala rescued our Mama (we named her Chocolate) together with her puppies. Unfortunately, one of the puppies did not make it.

Don Alvaro took care of all the vet checks. Chocolate has a few fractures in her back legs, but luckily the spine is fine. We are currently discussing with the vet the appropriate treatment to see what surgery may be required.

Chocolate and her puppies are now in Santa Marta, and all puppies will be soon ready for adoption. We are looking for their forever homes mainly in Colombia, however we are also open to an international adoption. Once Chocolate is in better shape she will also be looking for a forever home.

Unfortunately, the whole process is quite expensive. We have monthly costs of a day care, food and regular vet checks at 200 euro. Additionally, Chocolate requires a special examination to assess the need for a surgery. We truly hope that a proper physiotherapy will be enough, however we will know for sure in the upcoming weeks.
