This story begins towards the end of 2016/early 2017 when Stephen developed a serious ulcer that almost took his life. The medical bills added up but with insurance the costs were manageable. In 2018 Stephen and Kathleen welcome their first child, Taylor. Taylor was suspected to have a serious heart condition and issues with his development.  Between his birth,  the visits with specialists, and medical tests; this family hit their $8,000 deductible again. By God’s grace, Taylor’s heart problems did not require surgery however, the pediatrician recommended genetic testing for his developmental delays. In 2019 Kathleen Dodson was diagnosed with colon cancer. She was given surgery to have her entire colon removed. Between this surgery, Taylor’s check ups with specialists (...more testing) , and Kathleen’s check ups; the family hit their deductible of $8,000 AGAIN. After Kathleen’s surgery, doctors advised her she would need a complete hysterectomy due to the type of Cancer they found and the fact her mother died of Ovarian Cancer. If they wanted more children, they needed to have them sooner rather than later. Baby David was then born April 22, 2020. 5 days after birth David’s temperature dropped dangerously low during the Covid outbreak. Baby David was air lifted to Children's hospital in D.C. for emergency care. He was given IV antibiotics and kept in ICU. Baby David is now healthy and did not contract Covid 19. Between David’s birth and the trip to Children’s hospital via helicopter, the family was yet again hit with their $8,000 deductible. The medical debt owed is overwhelming for this family. Kathleen was laid off in June (also couldn’t work for periods of time for her recovery) and is trying to start a new job but Stephen’s current income will not cover their mortgage and mountain of medical debt.
