About 35 years ago, a remarkable discovery was made in Dodge County, Wisconsin. Steve Persha unearthed the bones of a juvenile mammoth near Hustisford and Iron Ridge. What makes this find so unique is not only the age of the mammoth, but also the presence of possible human made stone tool cut marks on one of the leg bones. Alongside the mammoth remains, bones from an extinct species of bison called Bison Antiquus were also found, suggesting this site may have been a Paleo-Indian kill processing camp. With only four or five other mammoths ever discovered in Wisconsin, this is a truly rare and important find for both the state and Dodge County.
To unlock the full story of this mammoth and its place in our region's history, we need to conduct AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectrometry) dating on one of the rib bones. This process, performed by Beta Analytic in Florida, will provide an accurate date for the specimen. The results could offer new insights into the Late Pleistocene in Wisconsin and help us better understand when early humans first occupied this area of North America. The cost for this specialized dating is essential for making this research possible.
By supporting this fundraiser, you are helping to preserve and uncover a vital piece of our shared history. Your generosity will not only benefit the Dodge County Historical Society, but also everyone who values scientific discovery and the story of our past. Please consider making a donation and sharing this campaign with others who care about local history and archaeology.
