Newly married Iranian DJs Nick and Athena remix the past and present as they trace New York’s underground sound back through centuries of Persian musical heritage, uncovering how history, exile, and rhythm collide on the dance floor.

DIRECTORS STATEMENT

Hi! My name is Keyana Ayaz, and I’m so excited to share my senior thesis documentary with you! This story is one I hold deeply close to my heart, showcasing and blending both my Persian culture and my passion for electronic dance music.

I was scrolling on TikTok one day over Summer when I discovered a DJ named Nick AM. The video was of him and his wife, Athena, “turn[ing] a Persian classic into a club banger.” I was instantly hooked and was so excited to find this community. Until then, I had never seen any Persian artists who were mixing the kind of music I loved. For the first time, I finally felt represented within a community I had always been passionate about. Nick’s identity, his artistry, and his fusion of rich house music with Persian textures pulled me in immediately—and I knew I had to tell this story.

I am so excited to follow the stories of Nick and Athena, navigating their way through New York City for their shows over Halloween weekend. As my senior thesis, this film embodies the skills, knowledge, and artistic vision I have developed throughout my time at Chapman.
