Documentary: J. Andre Smith’s Artistic Legacy

Donation protected
J. Andre Smith was a World War I veteran who, after losing a leg in service, dedicated his life to art and innovation. Instead of letting his disability define him, Smith went on to create a unique Mayan revival artist research center in Orlando, Florida. Nearly a century later, this center is still thriving as a museum and an experimental artist compound, and it remains the only site of its kind in Florida on the National Registry of Historic Places.

I was inspired to create a documentary about Smith’s life and legacy because his story is one of resilience, creativity, and lasting impact. Through my production company, White Ladder Productions, and in collaboration with the Art and History Museums of Maitland, we are working to bring Smith’s remarkable journey to a wider audience. Our next step is to interview a leading expert at the Smithsonian, whose insights will add depth and credibility to the film.

The funds raised will go directly to the Smithsonian to cover the costs of filming on-site and securing perpetual rights to the interview content. This is a crucial part of the documentary, and we need support to make it happen. We are aiming to secure the necessary funds by the week of December 22, 2025, to keep our project on track. Your support will help preserve and share the story of an artist who turned adversity into inspiration for generations to come.
